This sounds like plantar fasciitis, which is not really a problem of the heel, but one of the connective tissue in the arch of the foot. I have had this condition 3 times, and it is very painful, especially upon getting out of bed in the morning. About the best thing I found for to do is to stretch the foot by bringing the toes up toward the knees and pushing down on the heel to stretch the achilles tendon. Magneisum might also be of some help.
Also, you might talk to a podiatrist about getting custom fitted arch supports for your shoes. It literally took months to get rid of this though, no matter what I did.
