The battery effect, if any, makes silver ions go to the amalgam
whereupon the available mercury [if any is available] absorbs the silver
and further hardens the amalgam.
Silver will plate copper etc by natural battery effect, but copper won't
plate silver..
A gold crown can attract silver ions out of a silver filling, though.
...something about relative electro-potentials...??
