OK, based on Jason's suggestion, here's what I did and what I got: (1) installed bsdgames on the Linux box. (2) set the Linux serial console and the terminal to 9600 baud. (3) $ rain (4) Watch the drops. It works fine. Nice. (5) $ telnet livvax (6) Log in to the VAX (7) Everything works now!
Thank you. Apparently, the problem was that the telnet session was expecting me to be running at 9600 baud. Before, I was running at 38400 baud. This is good. I like 9600 baud.
