Thanks for testing. Sorry about the breaking change, they're never
fun.
The change didn't happen in v2.2.0, it happened in some previous rev.
Looks like you now should override
Timeline.OriginalEventPainter.prototype._showBubble = function(x, y,
evt) {
in file api/scripts/original-painter.js
If you need further help, look at the change history of the file
original-painter.js at some point in the past you'll see where things
were changed.
Once you've updated your software to the current rev of Timeline, you
might want to submit your example to the Timeline source tree (I can
handle that if you wish). That way, your technique of overwriting the
method would become a part of the "test suite" (such as it is)
In your example, please include a lot of comments so it will be clear
to other readers what the sw is doing.
