                   I have done this with timeline. What I did was to use an 
iframe module to load a static html page for the javascript and the div. I 
used a module to add fields to a standard item for things like date, colour 
etc. I gathered the events by using categories - one per timeline. To glue 
it all together I modified the php json script on the wiki to walk the 
joomla tables and extract the information. So the code I wrote/modified was 
that php script and the html page. Everything else was off the shelf 
modules from the joomla marketplace - all free of course ;). 

This is all a bit of a hack but you can see the result at 
history.singlespoon.org.au. It was a proof of concept for using timeline in 
secondary school teaching.
