hi David,
both rules have been designed for pairwise correlation of two different
event types (say, A and B). The event correlation operations started by
the Pair rule work as follows:
1) when event A appears, execute an action immediately and wait for
event B during T seconds,
2) when event B appears during T seconds, execute another action and
terminate; when B does not appear during T seconds, terminate silently
without action.

In contrast, PairWithWindow rule starts operations that behave as follows:
1) when event A appears, wait for event B during T seconds,
2) when event B appears during T seconds, execute an action and
terminate; when B does not appear during T seconds, execute another
action and terminate.

One notable difference between the operations is that PairWithWindow
operations always execute one action out of two, and the selection
depends on the appearance of event B. In contrast, Pair operations
always execute two actions when both A and B are observed within the
window. Also, the first action is always triggered when the operation
starts.

hope this helps,
risto
