Is this still an issue? gnome-scan seems completely stale/dead/deserted to me,
while sane is still alive and well.
This should be reviewed when gnome-scan is ready, and that could take a while
or might happen never at all...

Can I close this?

Title:
  Use gscan/gnomescan backend

Status in Simple Scan:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Use the gnomescan backend instead of the SANE.
This application is currently using SANE because:
  - There had previously been problems with gnomescan so using SANE was more
guaranteed to work
  - Documentation on gnomescan was not easy to find
