ADF doesn't detect pages correctly

Bug description:
When using Simple Scan with my new HP ScanJet 5590, the pages are not
detected correctly. And it causes the output to be produced with bad
page breaks
I can fix this by setting the bottom-y to 28.2 in Xsane but those
options aren't present in simple-scan. Also changing the paper size
does nothing. I am using letter paper in this case.
I am attaching an ouput PDF where the problem is visible on page 2 and
even more on page 3
