There's an old fable that talks about a man who found an
eagle's egg and put it in a nest of a barnyard hen. The
eagle hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with
them. All his life, the eagle did what the barnyard chicks
did, thinking he was a barnyard chicken.

He scratched the earth for worms and ate the chicken
scratch the farmer threw to him. He clucked and cackled.
And he would thrash his wings and fly a few feet in the air.

Years passed. One day he saw
a magnificent bird above
him in the cloudless sky. It glided in graceful majesty
among powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of
its strong golden wings. The eagle who thought he was
a chicken looked up in awe. "Who's that?" he asked.
"That's the eagle, the king of the birds," said his neighbor.
"He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth-- we're
chickens."
One day the eagle flew low over the barn yard and
recognizing his own kind the eagle landed.  At the
sight of this rather scary rari bird marching around so
cocky like in their very midst the chickens ran for cover
screeching "The eagle has landed, the eagle has landed"
including the eagle who thought he was a chicken.

In secret the chickens whispered among them selves;
"Who is this weird bird?  What does he mean flying in
here; upsetting us like this? Who does he think he is?"

The eagle calmly surveyed the situation with a wink of his
eye and with sharp tongue in cheek he began to drop into the
barnyard every day.  The chickens continued to run and hide.
"This bird has a very sharp beak that could hurt," they observed.
But in his sharp beak, a beak like a two edged sword; the eagle
carried a little piece of fresh manna meat and left it there in the
barnyard for whosoever will to come; and eat thereof.

The chicken/eagle timorously came out from hiding in the
bushes and tasted of manna meat which he knew not of.
The chickens said "Error, error. We are not meant to eat
fresh manna meat. We are of the earth earthy. We eat
the premixed predigested bagged chicken scratch the
farmer doles out down here in the dirt."

But the chicken/eagle hopped out and ate the manna meat,
left there, fresh; every day. He found he could digest it easily.
And he grew strong, and developed an appetite for this manna
meat.

One day the eagle didn't come back to the barn yard, but
could be seen soaring on his golden wings very high in the sky.
The eagle/chicken, having become very strong and confident;
and also very hungry; flapped his wings. Much to his surprise
he rose to the top of the fence that had kept him in the
barnyard.

Wow!  Whole sight!  Fully attentive now, and no longer
in total denial he knew he could see.  Sitting there on the
fence, making yet another choice ;-) he spread his wings.

At that very moment a gust of the Only Choice there is Wind
caught his wings.  He found himSelf high in the sky, gliding
in heaven where he belonged; an eagle soaring with eagles
in the calm reality far beyond any disturbance from vexing
attempts to keep him in the barnyard.

He thought he could hear the voice of the eagle with the sharp
pointy beak, the one who had seemed to plop right down there
in the barnyard with him. But he could see without denial, no
longer being in partial vision.  He was here, now; in the great
unlimited all there is awareness.

It was his own Voice!!! He laughed!

Strengthened by the manna meat he had found his own Voice!!!

And it was his own Voice all the time; the One Voice that
points to the reality of all the eagles who dreamt they were
chickens:

You are awake in heaven right now.

You are not in a dream world, for no such world exists.

Only the appearance of such a world ripples through
your mind as a dispensation of grace in a tiny mad
twist of mind into denial that really wasn't meant
to be serious, and yet which evoked fear.

I say grace because that is what the illusions are,
a forum for repentance and forgiveness, wherein
you can rediscover that you are not lost.

Consider it something like a daydream, where you
are awake, but deeply distracted to the point of
seeing the dream and feeling it, reacting to its
erratic dance...but deep within knowing the certainty
of your own reality and a gentle dance that gives you
confidence and faithful edification.

And all the eaglealtarlights called out as they glided in the
true report, "It is true!  Nothing has stopped the unwavering
law of constancy."

Certain in their own reality they knew they had never been
in a barnyard at all.
