Timeless Mind, Ageless Body

Something is obviously wrong with our current model of the human body. The reality is that your physical body is not a frozen anatomical structure, but literally a river of intelligence and information and energy that’s constantly renewing itself every second of your existence. Just as you can’t step into the same river twice because new water is always flowing in, the real you cannot step into the same flesh and bones twice. Every second of your existence you are renewing your body more easily, more effortlessly and more spontaneously than you can even change your clothes. In fact, the physical body you are using to read this article is not the same as the one you sat down with a short while ago.

Various scientists have calculated that in less than one year, you replace about 98 percent of all the atoms in your body, making a new liver every six weeks; a new skeleton (which seems so hard and solid and permanent) every three months; a new stomach lining every five days; a new skin once a month. Even the brain cells you think with, as carbon and hydrogen and oxygen, weren’t there one year ago; and the actual raw material of the DNA, which holds memories of millions of years of evolutionary time, comes and goes every six weeks.

If you think you are your material body, you certainly have a dilemma–which one are you talking about? When I gave my talk in Washington I used my 1993 model. The previous time I was there I took with me the same suitcase, some of the same clothes, some of the same lecture notes, but not the same body. The physical body I took with me is merely recycled earth, water and air.

I’d like to propose that we are not physical machines that have learned how to think. Perhaps it’s the other way around: We are thoughts (and impulses, consciousness, feelings, emotions, desires and dreams) that have learned how to create physical bodies; that what we call our physical body is perhaps just a place that our memories call home for the time being.

I would also suggest that this is not just an interesting, esoteric, philosophical speculation based in Eastern mysticism, but that in fact we can look at it through the window of current science. Today, if you asked a really good physicist what’s the true nature of the physical body, she would tell you that ultimately it’s made up of atoms; the atoms are in turn made up of subatomic particles moving at lightning speed around huge empty spaces. These particles suddenly appear, hang on for a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a second, and then collide, rebound, disintegrate, and disappear into a void; and these subatomic particles are not material things; they are actually fluctuations of energy and information in a huge void.

As you go beyond the facade of molecules into the subatomic cloud, you end up with a handful of nothing. The question is: What is this handful of nothing–is it just an empty void, or possibly the womb of creation? Could it be that nature goes to exactly the same place to create a galaxy of stars or a cluster of nebulae or a rainforest or a human body as it goes to create a thought? Could it be that our inner space is no different from outer space, and could it be that if we could go to this place we could become creators on our own?

Today many scientists recognize that the essential nature of the material world is not material. The essential stuff of the universe is not stuff. What is even more interesting is that it becomes thinking non-stuff; and as it thinks it creates everything from stars to galaxies to human bodies. I would suggest that a thought is nothing but a quantum event in the same unified field from where nature creates everything. A thought is a fluctuation of energy and information in the same void.

I know we experience our thoughts as willfully elite things that are linguistically structured and speak to us in the English language (and mostly with an Indian accent), but before thoughts are spoken they are just fluctuations in the same quantum fields. Nature is a thinking organism, and our own thinking is just one reflection of nature’s thinking. Thoughts transform themselves into molecules, and these molecules, called neuropeptides (first discovered in the brain), are literally messengers from inner space. Therefore, to think is to practice brain chemistry and body chemistry because these receptors are not only on the neurons in the brain, they are on all the cells of our body.

If you look at T cells and B cells and lymphocytes you find they are constantly eavesdropping on your internal dialogue. Somebody inside you is constantly having a conversation with themselves. One thing about this person: He/she/it never shuts up. And the immune cells are listening. Not only are they listening, they are participating in that same conversation, because they make the same peptides the brain makes when it thinks. In fact, there are neurobiologists who say there is no difference between the immune system and the nervous system–the immune system is a circulating nervous system. It thinks, it has emotions, it has memory, it has the ability to make choices and to anticipate events.

Even more interesting, this is true not only of the immune system, but all the cells in our body. So when you say you have a gut feeling about such and such, you are not speaking metaphorically but quite literally, for the gut makes the same chemicals the brain makes when it thinks. In fact, your gut feelings may be more accurate because gut cells haven’t yet learned how to doubt their own thinking.

We are discovering that our body is actually the objective experience of consciousness, just as our mind is the subjective experience of consciousness. But they’re both inseparably one. The body is a field of ideas. When you say "My heart is heavy with sadness", your heart is literally loaded with fat chemicals. When you say "I’m bursting with joy", your skin is loaded with endorphins, interleukins and interferons, which are powerful immunobody regulators and powerful anticancer drugs.

You and I are neither the body nor the mind; we are the creator of both, which is pure consciousness. It’s difficult sometimes to express this in words, yet this has been, in fact, the wisdom of almost every spiritual tradition in the world. In ancient Vedic wisdom, for example, there is an aphorism that says, "I am not the mind, I am not the body. I come within myself to create body and mind. I experience myself subjectively as the mind. I experience myself objectively as the body and the physical universe. But I am neither–I am beyond both." The aphorism goes on to say: "I am That, you are That. All this is That. That is all there is."

Understanding that consciousness is the creator of mind and body, I think, is really necessary for us to survive and create a new reality. Not only is the body a field of ideas, but so is the physical universe we inhabit.
