A general question for the list:
Does anyone have recommendations for free-of-charge open relay RBLs to replace
the MAPS RSS now that it's gone subscription? I've tried out
relays.osirusoft.com, but it's blocking too much legitimate mail for me. An
example is that it includes a pbi.net host that is apparently an outgoing
relay used by one of my hosting clients, who's a Pac Bell customer. He
routinely sends himself a copy of messages that go to a list of his customers.
He wasn't too happy when my server started bouncing those messages due to the
pbi.net server being in the osirusoft black list. I know that Pac Bell is no
angel when it comes to securing mail servers, but I can't afford to be black
listing hosts from which my users could be receiving legitimate mail. I'm
still using dialups.osirusoft.com and spamhaus.osirusoft.com, but I've removed
inputs.osirusoft.com from the mix. I'd love to find a relay black list that's
not quite so draconian. IOW, I'm willing to accept some small amount of spam
in exchange for not blocking legit mail -- where necessary, I can and do take
care of non-listed open relays with entries in the local black list. I had
found the MAPS RSS to be an effective compromise, but I have serious doubts
that I can sell my boss on paying for it (he's decidedly non-technical and
explaining to him why using black lists is a good thing would be somewhat
worse than a root canal sans anesthetic).
