I've wondered about this for some years, Eudora 3.1.3 in my case.

In my case, the DNS server is a 800Mhz linux box about 14' of cat5 and a
fast ethernet switch away. A proper MX record is present.

Thank you Bill, all is now clear. Eudora is notorious for taking over all
the clock cycles when it's in the foreground. I'm a little embarrased this
didn't occur to me before.
