Mark,

Are you running your own DNS server or are you having someone else (your 
ISP?)  handling the DNS function?  Within your account with godaddy you 
need to specify your DNS server to point your domain to.  Then that DNS 
server needs to point to your IP for the web/mail servers.

Secondly, GoDaddy is fine for your registrar.
