I have SIMS running with "Client Host" set to 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254,
which is the addressing range for the internal systems. I also have the
"Relay Clients Only" enabled. My question is how do I let someone who wants
to send mail, thru the sever, that are outside of the network, without
exposing the system to relay. They want to be able to send from home, which
is on a cable modem and also from various other places. Can I accomplish
this and at the same time protect my system from relay.
What version of SIMS?

If they use POP to check their mail, they will be authorized to send mail through the server for a short period of time (on 1.7, it's 30 seconds), on 1.8b8 and above, it's admin-configurable up to 10 minutes.

Cheers!
