Ok... What do I do about those clients who use *US* as their ISP and who have legitimate business with latin america and china?
When they are sending mail from a machine with an IP address in some other place like that, they should do one of 4 things:
1. Send through a mail server on the network which is providing them that IP address, i.e. their access provider's mail server.
2. Use SMTP AUTH or POP-before-SMTP to authenticate to your server for sending.
3. Use the POP3 XTND XMIT extension to send mail over a POP3 connection.
4. Use some flavor of tunnelling to give him a presence on your network. I like SSH for this because it is a shallow sort of tunnel that needs explicit config per application, but more the various deeper sorts of VPN are also reasonable choices and easier on non-technical clients
How about those who are using our webmail server when they travel?
That should be a non-issue, since it is almost certainly the webmail server, not the client machine, that actually talks to SIMS.
He was using either pop-before-SMTP or webmail. Either way, he was an authorized client on our SIMS when he sent it.
He's in Mexico, doing business all over latin america (he runs the eco tourism website planeta.com). He doesn't particularly trust his access provider's ability to deliver the mail (long story...). But it seems he should be able to send mail to anyone, no matter how spammy their rating might be. He might not be able to receive any back through the spam monsters, but that's a different can of worms. Or at least, it should be, in my mind.
Does he just need to send to those addresses through a whiteholed address? -- Bill Christensen http://greenbuilder.com/contact/
