To change the topic to a little more mail server specific: Does anyone on this list have opinions about "Sender Permitted From" (SPF) as described at http://spf.pobox.com/

I have advocated the concept ( a standard way to give domain owners control over forgeries) for almost 4 years, and I still like it. I'm not convinced that it is the FUSSP[1], and in fact am fairly convinced that it is NOT, but i think it can *AT A COST* mold spam into a shape that is more easily dealt with.

I'm not sure that people want to pay that cost, and MWW is not the finest proponent for SPF because he seems to believe that it is the FUSSP and that the costs (essentially killing off autoforwarding) can be avoided.

Or, for that matter, opinions on the concept of greylisting as described at http://projects.puremagic.com/greylisting/

Can work remarkably well. Also imperfect, but a good low-risk way to complement good blacklists. Some implementations have been quirky and problematic because they are too aggressive and break things like VERP mailing list addressing, but the general concept certainly has use. The past decade of tactical maneuver against spammers has pushed them to

Both of these seem to twist the existing RFC standards a bit but on the surface, both seem to have some promise if I understand them correctly. And neither of them will be supported by SIMS but do seem to be supported by postfix and sendmail.

Postfix and sendmail are the MTA's to be running if you want early access to new tricks. They are both suitable for serious sites doing large volume and needing clear safe open source licensing, so there are a lot of committed users with an interest in seeing them stay current and the ability to make that so. I hate to say it, but I don't expect to see a version of SIMS ever with significant improvements over 1.8b9d14, and it would be something of a surprise to see another version of any sort, even one fixing the known bugs. one of the known bugs (mishandling some 4xx responses) may make SIMS unusable in a greylisting world.
