I have not tried Panther yet, but on OS 10.2.8 SIMS works quite stable. It sometimes stops responding, so I am using the software "WhistleBlower" to monitor it every other minute. If it's not responding any more, I kill Classic and restart it.
That works pretty well for me for about 2 years now.
