The Path header allows a set of proxies to insert themselves between the UA
and Registrar. The proxy addresses carried in Path headers are augmented to
the AOR-Contact binding such that the path-recording proxies can be
traversed back when someone needs to reach that UA.

If you're building a Registrar and you ignore Path headers in a REGISTER
request, then the AOR-Contact binding information that you'll maintain will
be somewhat useless. The Registrar will not know which set of proxies to
route through to reach the UA. In other words, calls made to the UA will
fail to reach the UA.

If you're building a Proxy and fail to add a Path header when the network
topology dictates that you must, then the route set between the UA and the
Registrar will be broken and once again calls destined to the UA will most
likely fail to reach the UA.
