hi,
when proxy received  a  request,  it will judge if it  is responsible for
the  domain indicated in the request. if so, it can use whatever method to
determine where to send it. i think this is what you want to do. so you can
send Register to get the contact as well as use other ways.
you can refer to rfc3261 16.5.
