If "some error response" is the final response then you can't send
CANCEL. If that re-INVITE is for "session-timer" re-INVITE probably you
need to clear the call by sending BYE.
If that re-INVITE is for session modification ( change in SDP ) then
call need to fall back with earlier connected  SDP.

        I have never seen it. I though Cancels were only sent before a
dialog was established.
