Almost all mail readers, when you select "reply", will add a
"References:" header giving the message-id of the message you are
replying to.

For instance, in the message that I am replying to, the References
header is:

References: <000301ca726b$714a91e0$0a08a...@ds.mot.com> 
<1259673231.3782.421.ca...@scott> 
<b645798cb7dd6643910a368dd9cc8d8f8df...@lynkvm-mail01.lynk.com> 
<1259680194.3782.425.ca...@scott>

And many mail readers use the References headers to group messages.
Unfortunately, may of these mail readers do not show you the References
header it is creating for your outgoing message and do not give you a
way to modify or remove it.
