I'm not doing any fax with sipX at my main site, but I do have a customer who
uses a Mediant to route fax calls into Exchange 2007 UM.

Personally I like to keep things as simple as humanly possible, so any incoming
calls to a DID which is a fax number I would definitely route straight to the
fax server. Pros : lightens the load on SipX and if something goes wrong you're
debugging traffic between 2 points (Mediant and fax server). If traffic is
being routed via SipX you've got an extra debugging step which you really don't
need. Cons : fax calls won't be included in traffic reports in SipX. If you're
getting resource contention (i.e. all your trunks are busy) then that might
pose an issue.

I can't recommend any open source fax software, but if you don't mind doing it
in a Windows world take a look at NetSatisfaxtion products. They work great
with Mediants. I have calls from certain fax machines fail to send correctly to
Exchange every single time. NetSatisfaxtion receives these calls correctly.

Pete

Not sure what else I needed to say until someone asked some questions I guess
:).

The fax calls would be coming into the mediant 2K, I need to route them to a
fax server.
Someone on the list once told me that I could route the fax either from the
gateway or
from sipx. The comment was in passing as we were talking about something else.
I could
have misunderstood him, it's just what I seemed to remember.

This is what I am trying to get a handle on because sipx is SIP based but I was
sure this
person was telling me he would route fax calls using sipx.

Now, I don't want to bother using up any sipx resources so if it is better to
route from
the mediant, that's fine too. Thought I would ask in the list as I'm sure
others are doing
things along these lines.

It's a mediant 2000 running 5.6. It does have T.38 capabilities in it's
configuration.

It will more than likely be an asterisk based system for initial testing as
I've had great
luck getting faxing to work on those where many people said it wasn't very
reliable. Never
had a problem.
Once things are working, I might also use something like an Octel server or a
MultiTech,
haven't really decided just yet.

Thought I would get the routing going first to something I've got on hand, then
decide
what I'll use for fax server.
