I used to have the same problem and I found out it was a 7970 firmware related
issue.

I tried several firmwares and finally found out SIP70.8-3-3SR2S is the most
stable.

My issues appear to have been related to the SIP domain name not being resolved
on the network. I am hosting the dns zone on the sipX server and have my DC's
pointed to it for that particular domain but the actual A record did not exist
for some reason so I added it manually and all is fine now.

Thanks for the help.

Phone>Sip Stack>Timer Register Delta

Change from "5" to "300", this means the phone will try to re-register 5
minutes before the existing registration expires. Too short a setting (the
default of 5), could be easily interrupted by a slow network, etc.

I'm not a cisco fan, and simply use polycom whenever possible, because it
doesn't do stuff like this.

I would shorten the timeout period on the re-registration and see if this helps.

I've had the same problem. I am building a new pbx and I have about 10 phones
(7971) registered, after a few days I noticed about 3 phones have lost the
registration, not sure why and still investigating.

I've just recently deployed sipXecs 4.0.4 to replace an aging trixbox
installation. Everything has gone great except we have a couple Cisco 7970's
that keep losing their registration after being idle for a period of time.
Any ideas on what is causing this? I've dropped their registration timer
from 3600 seconds to 600 seconds but that did not help. It also doesn't
appear to happen as long as the phone is being used regularly. Our
environment also consists of quite a few Polycom Soundpoint 330's that do
not have this issue, all phones have been provisioned using sipX generated
config files and TFTP.
