I have a dialplan rule with several gateways associated (a VoIP provider and a
patton ISDN gateway).

Now, if I call someone who desn't answer or is busy I see that sipx calls the
callee twice.

Even if the VoIP provider sends a 486 to sipx, sipx switches to the patton
gateway for a second try.

Is there any response code that keeps sipx from trying the next gateway(s) in
the list?

A 6xx response code is supposed to prevent any proxy from trying any
alternative destination. The problem with that is that further upstream there
may be alternative destinations that should be tried. (See
draft-worley-6xx-considered-harmful for more on those problems.)
Unfortunately, SIP has no good solution for the "alternative routing" problem.
(See the various versions of draft-worley-redundancy-response for discussion of
that problem.)
