I don't have great experience with using the currently used device driver interface code in sipXtapi. I can say that we have complete new rewrite of device driver wrappers in sipXmediaLib, which has not yet been enabled in sipXtapi that should yield much better results from a latency perspective (at least on the windows side, but I think also on the Linux OSS side). I'm not sure when this will be connected up and used by sipXtapi, but I can say that the driver wrapper code has been tested quite a lot.
As for your issue with MSVC8, this is probably something that I introduced, since I initially created these projects. For the time being, you may have good luck using MSVC8, but using and importing the MSVC7.1 project files into MSVC8. The reason that I have MSVC8 project files in addition to MSVC7.1 project files is that MSVC8 can include multiple target platforms, i.e. for Windows Mobile 6. Windows Mobile 6 targets are present in the MSVC8 project files now, though I have not tested them in some time -- they probably need some maintenance. I haven't heavily tested the release targets of MSVC8 projects, so this may be why you are hitting some errors. I'll test the release projects when I can get a chance - which may not happen until after the end of the month.
