I also think that would be a good thing to do. Can you make those changes, Lorn?
Also, with regard to the perl-XML-simple issue, I seem to recall that the last time I worked on that, I determined that making a single RPM that would work across distributions would be difficult, perhaps not possible. But that a better solution would be to produce error output from installer.pl to point users to where they can download the appropriate RPM for their distribution. This could simply be a list (the easiest coding, and probably no reason to make it more difficult) that is printed if the user doesn't have that package installed. I would probably just do the top 5 distributions, and then additional distributions as users send in additions. It could look something like this:
SuSE 8.1:
http://alpaca.mcs.anl.gov/suse/i386/8.1/suse/i586/perl-XML-Simple-1.08-43.i586.rpm
Mandrake 9.1:
http://alpaca.mcs.anl.gov/Mandrake/9.1/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/perl-XML-Simple-2.03-1mdk.noarch.rpm
Etc...

I can do it in bash. I'd be happy to contribute a wiz-bang do-it-all 100% portable installer in bash (I've already converted most all of installer.pl's functionality to bash already).
If this is okay let me know and I'll be happy to participate.
