Free Software of the Month - AVG

It's the end of another month, so it must be time for another free software
offering.

Are you worried about viruses (or virii, if you prefer)? The List would
like to soothe the concerns of its gentle members who are not running
anti-virus software by suggesting this free application. This program, from
the clever folks at Grisoft, in Germany, may lighten your spirits about the
whole virus scene. Their anti-virus application, AVG, may be the last of
the free, full-featured programs of this type available for Windows.

The download size is just under 5 MB and once installed, configuration is
extremely simple. AVG will check your mail if you use Outlook Express as
well as scan your downloads and BIOS at boot up. Naturally, it will do a
complete hard drive scan as well. One of the most critical factors of any
anti-virus software is keeping the virus definition files current. This is
one area where AVG really shines. A simple click from within the program
when you are online will cause it to check to see if there are new update
files and download them automatically.

If you want to feel more armored against the unhappy consequences of having
a virus run amok on your hard drive, try out AVG. If you're already using
anti-virus software, keep it current by updating its files.

Be safe out there.
