        Google Groups

Although many of the List's gentle members have been surfing the Net for
years, some may have abandoned the dubious pleasures of Usenet, while a few
may not yet have plumbed this particular element. If this aspect of the Net
has not yet appeared on your radar or you have simply revolted at having
the accompanying flame wars downloaded to your newsreader, the List has an
alternative suggestion.

This summer the all-pervasive search engine Google acquired Deja News so
that much of Usenet is still available for viewing and posting directly
from your browser. (If you have Netscape Communicator you already have
access to its built-in newsreader.) There are thousands of Usenet groups on
every conceivable topic from bird watching to soap operas, as well as a
host of computer related themes.

Do a search on a subject which interests you and chances are there will be
a Usenet group of like-minded individuals whose postings you can peruse.
However, there are limitations on the number of posts which can be
retrieved.

Be warned; Usenet groups are unmoderated and comments can become vitriolic
but the information from a Usenet group can be valuable and informative.
