Salam,
Mohon maaf saya akan menulis dalam bahasa ingris karena lebih tetap.
I just read this newsmessage that there will be built a subway in
. Jakarta The 32-kilometer subway will stretch from
Kota in West Jakarta to Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta, passing by National Monument (Monas) Park inCentral Jakarta .
Of course this will take years to happen. Which gives us just the time we need to prepare for the first decent archeology research of
’s soil since independence. Jakarta
When you dig for a subway, as has been experienced in
, you dig through ages of urban development. When digging on the aforementioned stretch, you will find hidden remnants of castles/ kratons/ fortifications, factories, mills, mansions, old kampungs, mosques, slave graveyards. Probably there is another padrao somewhere. Amsterdam
Whatever you ll come upon: you ll find more information and artefacts telling about
’s history than ever has been found before. Jakarta
Until now archeology has never been taken seriously in
. There have been smaller well-done projects. But so far there have never been a well researched, methodically and systematically undertaken digging project where the results have been published and the findings are preserved and stored in a museum and travel the world. Sorry to say so, but most archeology projects done by DKI or others do not match any international standard. Jakarta
What you need here is this:
- in advance of the subway digging, you need permission to search the planned subway track
- you need a huge team of experienced archeologists: people who have been digging for say at least 5-10 years and recognize a shard of a 16th century bottle or porcelain immediately, most likely they will be foreigners: this is a chance of a lifetime to really train Indonesian archeologists
- you need loads of equipment
- you need a huge climatized storage area where the findings are cleaned and preserved: for instance a 17th century sword retrieved from the mud needs instant treatment to prevent it from desintegrating
- you need huge funding
- you need 100 % political support from DKI, the governor, etc: this is the hardest part because there is practically no understanding for the benefits of decent archeology in
Jakarta
If you have done all this you will receive worldwide acclaim.
will be recognized as the true metropolis it is, that is, a city with a rich and intriguing history, salvaged from the earth. Jakarta
In other Asian countries archeology projects have been done and well received. For instance the recovery of a Chinese wreck off the coast of
Brunei made a wonderful exhibition in. Paris
Who wants to do this with me? I have talked previously with Jerzy Gawronski, city archeologist of the city of
Amsterdam , who is also a professor at. He was very enthousiast and is probably willing to come over. Amsterdam University
What we need to do is form a group of enthousiasts who are willing to organise this and convince the government that this is as important as the Rapid Mass Transportation itself.
Yours, Max
