Richard Crawford filmed the love story between a Marine on leave from Vietnam and a war protester in 1969 in San Diego and Berkeley. Images of Balboa Park, the Crystal Pier and the La Jolla Cove are visible in the film. After some early success, the film was tied up in legal action that cost Crawford control of its rights for some 30 years, during which it wasn't shown. Now, the Carlsbad resident has full control, and he has shown it to much acclaim at film festivals in Vienna, Rotterdam, New York and Chicago. Friday he is bringing the film to Carlsbad for screenings at 7 and 9:45 p.m. at the Carlsbad Village Theater, 2822 State St. Adding to the '60s ambiance is a 6 p.m. performance by psychedelic rock group Strawberry Alarm Clock , best known for its hit "Incense and Peppermints." Also appearing is David Stanley , stepbrother to Elvis Presley. The movie portrays the many cultural changes of the era, explained Crawford. "People needed to see a movie about sex, drugs, rock and roll and Vietnam and that's what this movie is." Demonstrating how things have changed since then, proceeds from tonight's event are being shared with National Veterans Transition Services Inc., which provides counseling and job training to help veterans integrate back into society, Tickets are available for $15 at www.captainmilkshake.com or $18 at the door.
