I'm still seeing this issue in 1.0RC1. I only see thumbnails if I have Skim set to open files with the contents pane visible. If I have it set to hide the contents pane when a file is opened, then when I later open the contents pane the thumbnails section is empty.

My system is an MBP running Mac OS X 10.4.10 and Skim 1.0RC1
