The Sparkle updater is indeed the only automatic connection to the  
internet. But I find it a bit unexpected, because the appcast is  
downloaded in asynchronously, so it shouldn't block. I also cannot  
reproduce it. Maybe the problem is that Sparkle starts too early  
checking, before the app may be fully set up. Anyway, hopefully this  
will be improved in the next release, because I just upgraded Sparkle  
to the latest version, and this uses different logic and code for  
starting and downloading.
