I'll pursue this on the aquamacs mailing list. This may not do much good
either. It is possible that the aquamacs code that generates the postscript is
vanilla gnu emacs code, or at least not something that the aquamacs developers
want to change.
I don't know much about the technical side of postscript/pdf. Since Skim relies
on pstopdf, can anyone say whether its behaviour in this case is acceptable?
That is, there are (at least) two possibilities here.
FIrst, the postscript output by aquamacs/emacs may be "correct". If so, then
pstopdf is b0rken.
Second, maybe the postscript output by aquamacs/emacs is "bad." Depending on
what "bad" means in the context of the Adobe postscript standard, possibly
pstopdf should not just silently render such postscript by outputting no text
at all - which is what it does in this case.
Either way, maybe there *is* something for Skim developers to consider, i.e.
whether pstopdf is the right tool for the job.
Or not ;-)
