Howdy all. I've begun to use the Dropbox file synchronization service recently.
Unfortunately, it, like everything else in this world, doesn't synchronize file
EAs. So no skim notes by default get copied between home and the office.
So a few question. 1) I've set Skim to "automatically save a skim notes backup
when saving" at both locations. Seemed to work fine, but I've now discovered
that Skim will only load these notes if the file itself has none in the
extended attributes. So for files that I've edited from both places, they now
only read in the locally embedded EA copy of the notes, even if the .skim notes
backup is more recent. Sure, I can, every time I open a PDF, do File>Read
Notes, but that's tedious and, way more importantly, I'm bound to forget on
many occasions, which would cause serious data loss, when I later save and
overwrite the .skim file from another location. What can I do?! Is there a way
to disable EA saving entirely?
2) Relatedly, because of all these hijinks dealing with syncing and EA, I
really want to locate all of the files which I have that contain embedded Skim
EAs, so that proper attention and care may be payed to them, backups can be
exported, etc. I seem to recall some terminal command to find EAs, or a
particular type--presumably y'all know it?
Oh, and finally, as long as I'm writing, I've wondered about this for a long
time. 3) Is it possible to inverse-crop a PDF's page size? Suppose I have a
journal article on 6x9 paper size, and want to enlarge it to 8.5x11 so that
there are larger margins which I can write on with text notes. Can Skim, or
some other (free) tool do this?
Cheers, thanks for any help everyone!
Jeremy
PS: Shameless plug, but if you're not familiar with Dropbox and you ever work
from two places, I can't recommended it highly enough. It is now tied with Skim
as the most essential piece of software I use. Free storage up to 2 GB, and,
(here's the plug) if you sign up through this link, we both get an extra 250MB.
