It's just not calling a particular method at a particular point, in other words it's just a coincidence that Preview doesn't crash on it. I can reproduce this crash in a trivial app (3 lines of code) that uses only Apple's code, so I'm 100% sure it's Apple's bug. If you want to file a bug report with Apple (bugreport.apple.com) you can refer to my bug rdar://problem/7302588. That may help, because Apple gives higher priority to bugs that are more often reported.
