I actually wouldn't know.It could be that the figure is using a newer PDF 
feature that Apple's PDFKit does not support, that's usually the problem when 
things work in Adobe and not in Skim or Preview. There's really nothing you or 
I can do about it (except for sending bug reports to Apple.)

I would be interested to see such  file, perhaps as simple as possible. You 
could send it to me off list.
