The older versions are linked on the Skim home page. But I strongly doubt it 
will make any difference, as there is no fundamental change in the display for 
a very long time. As you see the same problem in Preview this sounds like due 
to PDFKit. A difference may be in the rendering of the thumbnails, try seeing 
if hiding them changes this. Though also that has not changed in a long time, 
and it does render them lazily.

To see where Skim spends it time you can try taking a sample using Activity 
Monitor.
