No idea, I don't have Lion so I cannot check this. It could be AppleScript, 
have you tried testing that? Or perhaps it's a timing issue, does it matter 
whether the file was already open or not? And do you see any console logs? If 
you want to answers you should try testing yourself, start with the 
AppleScript, testing out the pieces.
