Here's a check mark:  ✓ from one of the system fonts.  (Just cut and paste :)

Seriously, though, from the mac's menubar, you can get to the "character 
viewer" and in this way you have available all characters in all the fonts in 
your system.  Then simply insert the desired character in your document.
