If going back does not help, than it's not related to the changes that were made in 1.4.4. In that case there is probably nothing we can do. As always, I say that we actually discourage using the automatic update (even if we offer it), because it is inherently unreliable (but people still really really want it.) The best way is to update externally, e.g. using a script (see the wiki). You could send me the crash report (from Console.app), best off-list. But I probably won't be able to do much about it.
