Clarification: There are three lists: Contacts, Conversations, and Live Conversations. Live Conversations will contain any active calls and nothing else. When something is in there, it is not in either of the other two lists. Contacts is everyone, except whoever is in Live Conversations at this instant. The Conversations list is where missed calls, chats, contact detail requests, voice mails, file transfers, etc. go. It is important to understand how this works so you don't miss things.
So the sounds you're hearing should be producing entries in Conversations, not Live Conversations. Use Ctrl+2 to get to the Conversations list. Ctrl+3 is for the Live Conversations list. Here's a quick tutorial by example, just listing a scenario and which keystroke to use to get to the right list: Start a new chat: Ctrl+1. Start a call: Ctrl+1. Call someone you're chatting with: Ctrl+1 or Ctrl+2. Call someone whose missed call you just noticed: Ctrl+1 or Ctrl+2. Send a chat line to someone you're talking to: ctrl+3 (it's a call, so it's Live). Hang up, resume, or hold a call: Ctrl+3. Find out what you missed all day while at work: Ctrl+2.
