Belated answer here.

You asked why Skypewatch is so complex to set up.  In short, because
it has to be in order to be reliable.  A little explanation:  JAWS
calls parts of the script code when things happen, such as when you
press a key, when the screen changes, etc.  The scripts in
default.jss, which comes with JAWS, intercept those "events," as they
are called; and so do the Skype scripts.  The problem is that
default.jss will not let the Skype code even see some of those events
if default.jss gets to them first.  The complex setup is to make sure
the Skype code gets the events before default.jss does, so it won't
miss anything.  I did write the code to do its best if the older setup
method is used, but it is possible to miss some things that way.
