This sounds like Skype is controlling your audio settings. Have you checked the options setting under "Audio" to see if the switch "let Skype adjust my audio setting" is checked? If this is on you might try unchecking it and see if that leaves JAWS alone. I keep this unchecked and have no problem. The adjustments can then be made under "Sounds and Audio devices" in Control Panel.
