Alt+V, upArrow once, and if you hear Default View you're in Compact,
and if you hear Compact View you're in Default.  This works because
the last menu option in the View menu changes from what you're in to
the other alternative, so the name you hear there is the opposite of
what's currently active.

Default view shows conversations inside the main Skype window, one at
a time.  Compact makes the main Skype window much narrower, hence its
name, and shows as many conversations as you want, each in its own
task, and thus its own stop in Alt+Tab order.
