Ah, bit of confusion here: You do hear the phone number when you focus the SMS text box, but that is not because the number is in the box. The box is named after the recipient of the message, be it an SMS or a normal Skype text message. When you're sending an SMS to a phone number that is not in your contact list with a name, the "name" is in fact the number itself. So you should be hearing the number before the word "edit." Any text actually in the box would be spoken after the word "edit."
Finding Send SMS is ok of course, but just pressing Enter when you're done typing the SMS text should also send the message as far as I know, just like in a regular Skype chat window. I'm not sure why you ask for identification of when you get yourself into the SMS window. Just like for chats, the SMS window is named after the recipient.
