Is there a key command I may have missed that takes you to the list of
members in a conference call? Now I find an icon that shows the group but
not the individual members of that group if I need to remove one from the
conversation.

The Ctrl+4 issue is a known one, and your workaround is one of two,
the other being F6. As for which view is best, it's really down to
preference now. I use Default most of the time but might use Compact
if I get into a bunch of chats at once.
