Yes Sarah, I also think that the file in witch Skype keeps his settings
gets corrupted when Nicholas shuts down his laptop. But, Skype's
settings in Windows are not stored in registry, but in configuration
files in our Skype profile directory. That folder can easily be opened
by typing
%appdata%\Skype\
in our "Run" dialog, witch is invoked by pressing WindowsKey+R. In the
folder opened, there should be a folder with our Skype name (the one
that we use together with our password to login into Skype). When we
open the folder with our Skype name, we land in a folder with some
folders and in most cases - a lot of files. The files witch store our
Skype settings are "config.lck" and "config.xml". Most probably
something in those files gets corrupted during shutdown and that is why
Nicholas loses some of his Skype settings.

I like to personalise my sound settings and hotkeys. I always save
the changes after doing this. They work for a while but then at some
point they revert to the default settings. I think it does this every
time I turn my laptop off and then on again.
I am using Skype 5.0 (English) with the JAWS scripts 5.0b version 539
on Windows 7 (English).
Any ideas?
