Hey,
this is usuallly a not-read entry in the conversation list. When you hear
Skype followed by a number, that means you have something not read; so press
cttrl+2 for going to the contact list (note that this only works if you use
JAWS scripts provided by Doug Lee), then scroll it with harrows, and when
you reach a contact name followed by a number, press applications and choose
Send IM. You will land in a chat window if you enabled compact view, and you
can press alt+1 for reading last message, or ctrl+5 for going to the
messages list for that particular conversation.
Another way to know instantly if a voicemail came is to enable in your
account settings the email notification. I do not remember exactly the
procedure for that, but it can be useful, especialy when someone lets you a
voicemail when you're not on Skype.
