You have inadvertently discovered a useful, but sometimes confusing,
feature of Skype:
If you press UpArrow while in an empty chat input box, the previous
chat message you sent out from that box reappears. If you edit that
and send it, it does not send a new message, but instead, sends an
edit to the old message.
So the way to avoid what you're experiencing is to avoid pressing the
UpArrow key in an empty chat box. If you do accidentally press one,
the thing to do is to type Ctrl+A to select all the text, then Del to
delete it. By doing that, you inform Skype that what you're about to
type is not, in fact, an edit of the previous chat you sent out.

I can see where you're coming from with your question, Jimbo, and your
answer to that question makes sense, Sarah.
However, we don't have to let Skype automatically adjust our audio. In the
audio settings in the Skype options, there are checkboxes for the options
"Automatically adjust microphone settings" and "automatically adjust
speaker
settings", so, if those are unchecked, Skype shouldn't make a mess of your
microphone and speaker volumes. I have those checkboxes unchecked here,
which I've done for a long time, ever since an alarming experience on my
old
computer where my system volume went down to 30% without me touching
anything, and I was told Skype might have caused that to happen.
Obviously, it's up to other Skype users whether they leave the checkboxes
I
mentioned above on their default setting, which is having them checked, or
whether they uncheck them like I always do.

It's always been like that. even when you edit the xml file it does not
work. but remember most people don't know how to even work there computer
so skype figures it is just easier if it did it for you, and also most
people don't really care, or can't hear what's going on.
