The very first goal I had when I started writing an NVDA Skype addon
was to make NVDA announce the systray alerts for people going on and
offline, calling, etc. My problem was that I saw no easy way to do it
in NVDA. JAWS has a WindowCreatedEvent and a WindowActivatedEvent, but
NVDA had neither. I needed an event that would fire when one of those
alerts appeared, or I would have to scan the screen frequently and
constantly to catch them, which is not so efficient and can miss them.
It is technically possible, but my discussions with NVDA developers
gave me the idea that of the two known ways to get it done, one risked
NVDA incompatibilities down the line and the other would be both
difficult and perhaps slow things down.

Hi!
Given the increasing popularity of NVDA, I personally think it is well worth
bothering to have an NVDA add-on created for Skype, if someone is willing to
create one.
I have been a full-time NVDA user for three years now, and I personally
don't miss JAWS at all, especially not Eloquence, but that's another debate,
and obviously we all have our own personal opinions of screenreaders and the
voices they use, which are totally off-topic for this list.
As for using standard Skype with NVDA, I am currently managing well with no
add-on, but one thing I miss from SkypeTalking, and from the JAWS scripts
when I used them years ago, was announcements of who is going online or
offline or whatever, so I would certainly appreciate an NVDA add-on just for
that. So I join other NVDA users in hoping that a Skype add-on will
eventually be created.
Bye for now, and happy skyping, whatever screenreader you use!

Hello, barbuz,

The only person who can answer this is doug, himself, of course, but I'mm in
a guessing mood and I'm prepared to take a guess and doug, it would be
interesting to see if my thinking was right or wrong.
Nvda is far inferior to jaws which has been in existence and use for many
years, the eloquence voice is far superior to the nvda voices, so since
there is such a difference, why bother, bearing in mind that the nvda voices
I heard, exactly one year ago, sounded so strange and hard to understand,
that I vowed I would never even think about getting nvda, but now, you can
add ivona voices, from rnib and with these voices, especially created by
rnib and a partner, ivona, nvda is now reading to me in a voice which sounds
very human in its output and quality of delivery.

Now there is a debate between jaws and nvda users, unrelated to skype
matters, and I use both so I won't comment, but nvda is free and many more
people are using it it is definitely gaining in popularity, so, doug, is
barbuz right and is there grounds for optimislets hope that it will happen,
one way or another,

Andy.m among nvda users, regarding this question.

I believe that the thinking, at the time was something like:

Talking about NVDA addons for Skype, if my memory does not go wrong, Doug
was at first thinking to create one, but then he realized it wasn't worth
though I don't remember exactly why...
Bye!
